Sydney | NO CONTEST OFF TOUR

09/23/2024 - 09:24
If Australia is one of the great surfing nations, Sydney could well be the world's biggest surfing city.

With its four million inhabitants sharing the world's largest natural harbor and 80 kilometers of coastline, as well as incredible waves all year round, Sydney is a modern metropolis built on water, with a surf culture steeped in history and bravery.

From the famous surf sessions of Isabel Letham and Hawaiian Duke Kahanamoku at Freshwater Beach in 1915, to the lineage of world champions including Tom Carroll, Mark Occhilupo and Layne Beachley, to modern stars such as Molly Picklum and Jarvis Earle, the roots of Sydney's competitive heritage run deep. While the wider surfing community knows and celebrates world champions, it's the scene of local surfing enthusiasts that is the DNA of all success, and from Maroubra to Avoca, Newport and Bondi, our presenter Ashton Goggans meets a variety of exceptional locals and explores the world-class waves they're passionate about.

Building on the surfing boom, Sydney spearheaded the surfboard revolutions initiated by the Brookvale Six and Simon Anderson's invention of the thruster, but spawned the birth of an irreverent and sardonic multimillion-dollar surf industry. As if that weren't enough, the good old Australian café, where avocado toast is served with a flat white, became a global phenomenon after spreading to the beaches.

But none of this would exist without the waves, and from Cape Solander to North Narrabeen, Deadman's to Voodoo and everywhere in between, Sydney is packed with world-class surf spots. Press play and discover them for yourself. #nocontest #sydney #australia
