Flatspell
The Edge Board, Again

04/12/2025 - 17:40
We'd been through this before. As we started shedding layers and spending more time outside, we anticipated another summer, with the same unrealistic expectations.

There was a generous increase in daylight and a few extra degrees in the water, but our hopeful minds were forgetting the gutless windswell and howling northerlies that wouldn't let up until fall.

There was no escaping the season of skunk, but we could prepare for it. Last spring, we collaborated with Nothing Surfcrafts to find a board that would get us through summer and skim over its flat sections.

Inspired by George Greenough's 1960s Edge Board, the Flatspell merges two boards into one, designed to hold speed in meager conditions and excel when there's a bit more power.

João Berberan tested it in near-flat spells, but found it thrived in tapering pointbreaks with generous push, loved punchy beachbreak wedges, and even held its own in the barrel.

Shot over a few months and edited by Guilherme Martins, Flatspell documents an unfamiliar design in familiar surf. The Flatspell won't live in your car, but it delivers a feeling you can't get from your HP thruster.

And occasionally, breaking from routine makes routine feel good again.
