Out Front: Sydney

Five million people live in Sydney, but the place is really all about its geography: drowned river valleys, eroded headlands, shifting sand loads, and a sunrise over the ocean.

That last one is what gives Sydney surf its distinct light and color.

You might call it “backlit”, but the term doesn’t quite capture how a morning wave in Sydney can appear to hold sun, wind and cloud within itself.

Even on dark days the water can seem luminous. In this clip, shot by local cinematographer Spencer Frost, the quality of light in this unparalleled surf town is fully captured, along with the crazy range of surf produced along its 40-odd beaches and slabby platform reefs.
