Team Session At Double Island
Heavy Leisure

The gang of four, wild-eyed and restless, tearing away from the Noosa festival, chasing that shimmering dream at the edge of the rainbow, that fleeting thing you can never quite grab but always chase.

We loaded up the 4WD—good ol' beast of a machine—packed to the brim with the essentials: sandwiches to sustain us, snacks to keep us busy, water to cool us down, and beer, sweet beer, for when the sun would sink low and our minds would drift into that slow, timeless groove. We hit the road, roaring toward the ferry like we knew it was going to be all time, the boards stacked high, the windows down, the salty air filling our lungs. The car? Hell, it was bursting at the seams, full of bodies, surfboards, and that giddy anticipation, a hunger for an open face and a clean, free section far from the hustle of Noosa. Where the crowds claw at the waves like seagulls fighting for scraps. We headed north, north into the unknown, hoping the sands would be kind and the ride smooth. But that ole beach road, ah, the stretch had tricks of its own. Every now and then a hidden sand dune would rise like a ghost, sending us airborne, laughing, shouting, half in joy, half in fear—because with Tom Morat behind the wheel, who knows what waits on a sandy highway? But man, we made it. Over the hill, into that promised land! The Bay of Plenty! The waves rolled in, endless and graceful, lines stretching out to eternity. The crowd? Laid-back, like it should be. No rush, no fights, just the ocean and the day. The stoke hit like a wave breaking, and suddenly we were out of the truck, scrambling, waxing boards with hands shaking from the thrill. Time vanished as we paddled out into the mesmerising blue, chasing turns, cutting highlines, head dipping into waves that whispered like old friends. Hours passed like seconds, and when the sun began to fall, we staggered back, spent but alive, alive in that way you only feel after a day like this. We cracked open the cold beers, letting the bubbles and the stories rise, recounting each wave, each turn, each glorious moment. That was it, man—that was what we needed. Just us, the ocean, and the endless, beautiful now.
