What It Takes to Re-join the World Tour

Molly Picklum: What It Takes follows 20-year-old surfer Molly Picklum as she navigates her rookie year on the WSL Championship Tour in 2022.

Fresh off the high of qualifying, Picklum headed to Hawaii and put the world on notice with her opening event performances at Pipe and Sunset.

Despite plenty of highlight reel moments by the time the mid-year cut came into play at Margaret River things looked dicey for the natural footer from the Central Coast of New South Wales, Australia.

While most might see being demoted back to the Challenger Series as a kick in the teeth, Picklum turned it into the motivation she needed to click her contest game into gear, and she proceeded to get on a such a roll through the Australian, South African and Portuguese events that she easily re-qualified come Brazil. Job done, Molly headed to Hawaii once again, this time purely to put in the hours she knows are needed to earn your stripes at surfing’s ultimate proving ground.

While in the islands a last-minute invite to the Vans Pipe Masters turned into the high point of her career, and we ride shotgun to the podium with the resurgent Aussie.

Picklum is a fascinating study; the powerful natural footer with a bright future has a drive to succeed that can sometimes be the one thing getting in her way. As she says in Molly Picklum: What It Takes however, “I had to hit rock bottom to learn to take it easy, and I wouldn’t change it for the world.”
